Verticals and Pocket Change: Free 2023 Project Jelly Roll Patterns

National Sew a Jelly Roll Day is just around the corner – September 16, 2023. Moda designated the third Saturday in September as National Jelly Roll Day back in 2017 to inspire quilters to crack open a Jelly Roll® and get sewing with this fun precut! Since then, quilt shops around the country have joined the movement to offer in-person and virtual sewing events and special patterns for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day. Quilters on Instagram can join in the fun by posting their Jelly Roll projects with the hashtags #nationalsewajellyrollday and #projectjellyroll. (Want to read more about the history of the Jelly Roll and National Sew a Jelly Roll Day? Check out the original announcement HERE, and browse all our Project Jelly Roll blog posts HERE.)

Every year, Moda releases new, free patterns just for National Sew a Jelly Roll Day. Today, I’m sharing the first two patterns for you to download and enjoy now!

Verticals: You’ll need 1 Jelly Roll of your favorite collection, 1 Junior Jelly Roll of a background fabric, and 1 1/2 additional yards of that background fabric

The serene blues in Cascade by 3 Sisters combined with this pattern’s modern design makes for a sophisticated quilt!

Here, we’ve used Favorite Things by Sherri & Chelsi to make a fun holiday quilt that everyone will love.

So striking! Pairing our Bonfire Batiks with a dark Grunge background lets the colors in the batiks really pop!

Pocket Change: You’ll need 1 Jelly Roll of your favorite collection, 1 1/8 yard of a dark accent fabric, 1 1/8 yard of a light accent fabric, and 5/8 yard of binding fabric

Here, we’ve used Berry Basket by April Rosenthal to make the perfect picnic quilt.

For a more modern take on this classic 16-patch design, we’ve paired the vibrant colors of Sariditty’s Rainbow Sherbet with a black Bella Solid.

Here, we've used Shoppes on Main for a classic Christmas quilt.

Check back here on the Moda blog later this week for the final two Project Jelly Roll patterns for 2023.
