Hello! I’m Samantha from @samanthaleeolsen on Instagram and I’ve been sewing along with the Moda Bake Shop Birthday QAL.  I hope you have been enjoying making your ABCs or favorite quotes the last couple of months!

As a mother of small children I feel like it isn’t far from the truth to say that I’ve been singing the ABC song to my kids for the better part of the last decade.  The Spell it with Moda ABC quilt is such a darling way to capture our alphabet.  This quilt is the third ABC quilt that I have made and it is such a fun and fast project that I have no doubt I will be making more in the future.  The first two were gifted to two very special teachers of ours.  The sweet quilt I’m sharing today will be for my 3 year old daughter Gemma.

This quilt will be a fun way for her to practice her letters.  She can already recognize and point to the letters in her name and she is so excited for this quilt.

It was made with the latest fabric line from Bonnie and Camille, Little Ruby and the gorgeous background grey crossweave!  I have used both black and grey crossweave for background and I love the depth they give to any fabric.  There are several darling filler blocks in the pattern booklet and I let Gemma pick her favorite ones for her quilt.

I wanted to make something extra from the left over jelly roll strips and decided a wall hanging of her name would be perfect to put up in her room as we transition to a big girl bed.  I will quilt it with the same rainbow pattern as the quilt!

For a small filler block on the end I chose to pick a cute six inch block and added sashing to make it fit the quilt.  I love making six inch blocks.  They come together so quickly and are just the most darling size.

This block goes together quite easily. Sew the HST units first. Press them and trim to 2½" square. Next create the flower tip by sewing the flower print 1½" square to the background 1½" square. Press. Add the background rectangle to the top of this unit. Press and trim to 2½" square. Assemble the block and sashing as shown below.

This technique allows you to use any favorite six inch block for fillers as a fun way to personalize your Spell It with Moda quilt.

Don’t forget to post your projects to the hashtag on Instagram #MBSbirthdayqal so we can ooohhh and aaaahhh over your beautiful quilts!  See you there!
