60" Wide Toweling

It’s Jenelle from Pieces to Treasure, and I want to share some inspiration, information and ideas about 60” wide Moda toweling.

CT Unboxed Pieces to Treasure - Easy Living 60"

These large checks are the two new 60" towelings in Easy Living Toweling, coming next year.

This fabric is identical cloth to the 100% cotton, 18” wide, hemmed-edge towelings that Moda has done for many years.  You might have seen it, and used it.

These are the 18" towelings for Easy Living.

The difference here is that this toweling is 60” wide, and it is not hemmed on the edges.  It came about because the fabric is initially milled 60” wide, and then cut into 20” widths and hemmed on the long edges.  It occurred to me that having it 60” wide could be very useful.  Hence, I like to include a few in each toweling line that I create.

I have discovered that it makes the most wonderful quilt backing.  The extra width means you have less piecing, on the back, and the larger scale stripes provide some balance to the busy piecing on the front of the quilt.  It also makes the quilt totally reversible for a look that is classic and contemporary.  Based on my experience, I recommend that you wash the 60” wide toweling prior to quilting because it does shrink a tiny bit more than your regular patchwork cottons.

From Lakeside Toweling, this is No. 993 20.

This is No. 993 17 from Rock Pool Toweling.

This backing is No. 933 14 from Lakeside, and the quilt is Starstruck - PTT 206.

The fabric is soft, and drapes well, but is a little heavier in weight, making it perfect for sleeping under!  The quilt on my bed is backed in 60” wide toweling, and it is so comfortable.

Duvet covers are wonderful in 60” wide toweling.  The fabric is wide enough for Twin, Twin XL and Full sized duvets, without piecing the front.  To make larger duvet covers for Queen and King beds, I suggest piecing the fronts at the third and two thirds width of the duvet.  You can put a different toweling on the back to make it reversible and change the look, or keep it the same fabric as the front.  It is easy to make coordinating pillowcases from the 60” wide toweling too.

This is No. 993 25 from Easy Living Toweling - coming in 2022.  The quilt on the bed is Take It Easy - PTT 236.  It finishes at 72" x 92", and is made with assorted pieces of 18" wide toweling from the Easy Living range.

Tablecloths are perfect in 60” wide toweling.  Cut the fabric 26” longer than your table, which gives you enough hang down at each end.  Hem the edges with mitred corners for a professional finish.

A new pattern, Picnic Roll Up (PTT 236) uses 60” wide toweling on the front and back.  I have used the same buffalo check from my Easy Living Range on the front and back, but you could use a different fabric on each.  This fabric is sturdy and washes well, making it perfect for sitting on at the park or on the beach. It is also soft enough to wrap round your shoulders when it gets chilly.

The Picnic Roll Up finishes at 54" x 70".

It's made with No. 993 24 from my coming-in-2022 Easy Living range of toweling.  It's also lightweight enough that this roll-up is easily carried.

On my website www.piecestotreasure.com I have a free project for a Fireside Throw.

CT Unboxed 60" Wide Toweling - Fireside Throw

This throw uses 60” wide toweling on one side and regular patchwork cotton or flannel on the other - No. 993 20 from Lakeside Toweling, and No. 5132 16 from Lella Boutique's Smoke & Rust.  Two sides are fringed to enhance the texture of the throw.  Quick to make and perfect on the lounge, the bed or over an ottoman

Aprons are also ideal in 60” wide toweling.  The extra width gives you enough apron to wrap around and the fabric is sturdy enough to stand up to the rigours of the kitchen.  They look good too, so you might as well look great while you’re cooking up a storm.

Utility Apron - PTT202.  This is made with two pieces from the Rock Pool collection - the 60" toweling, No. 933 12, and a piece of the 18" hemmed toweling, No. 992 252.

This Utility Apron is also made with two pieces from the Rock Pool collection - the 60" toweling, No. 933 15, and a piece of the 18" hemmed toweling, No. 992 258.  It also uses a piece of the Star Bunting by Minick & Simpson.

The 60” wide fabric also makes fabulous quilt borders.  If your quilt is wider or longer than 60” you will need to piece 2 strips together.  The stripes are easy to piece so the seam is hidden, just match the stripes on two pieces of fabric, face to face, and sew down the centre of a stripe.  The pattern repeat will be continuous and the seam will be very difficult to see.  Then mitre the corners for a professional finish.

The borders are No. 993 16 from Rock Pool Toweling, and the quilt is Windmill - PTT 198.

Starstruck - PTT 206.  The borders on this quilt are from Rock Pool, No. 993 17.  The prints are from Bonnie & Camille's At Home collection.

It really goes without saying, that pillows are ideal in Moda toweling and 60” wide gives you the opportunity to make big pillows, body pillows and ottomans.  The covers are then washable and sturdy.
